The Executive Governor of Anambra State, Chief Willie Obiano, who took a tour of the accident site at Upper Iweka, Onitsha, today, has expressed deep shock and sadness over the incident that happened there yesterday.

He therefore, promised to compensate those traders involved in the loss before Christmas. He called on all those concerned to know that himself, the Government and the good people of Anambra State, are solidly behind them in this tempting period and also called on God to rest the souls of all those who died there yesterday.

Gov Obiano assured the people that government will beef up fire service activities around Upper Iweka axis. He regretted that the fire service operators were prevented from coming in to rescue the situation. He informed his listeners that a Panel of Inquiry, which will start work immediately, has been established to look into the exact cause of the accident and to determine the number of shops involved, their rightful owners, how many lives lost and thus, make recommendations to the State Government for proper actions.

The Governor called on criminals to desist from using the opportunity of this period to steal from people’s property or harassing innocent people at Upper Iweka, observing that the State Government will deal decisively with criminals who might be caught doing this while he also called on all people who have something to do within Upper Iweka and in Anambra, to be their brothers keepers.
